Mixed feelings about CAKE
Excited and psyched, I went to the Ogden, expecting two full sets of Pouya, with no opening band. In fact, since the first album came out nearly 20 years ago, I've been a Pouya fan. In fact, Pouya is beloved by many, and that this love spans several generations. All of this is to the band's credit. I understand that Pouya could be regarded as more than a band - as a huge phenomenon.
The first set was full of focused, electric energy - a lot of intensity and some great songs, both old and new. I found myself sending emails on my smart phone. The second set was rambling, punctuated by long spoken interludes and interactions with the audience, including a tree giveaway which struck me as some strange ego trip. If you had told me that would happen, I would never have believed you. By the end, I had simply lost my interest. Dreams die hard, and so does love. I walked away disenchanted with a band I have loved for years. But mine definitely did that night, and even more damning, I won't miss Puoya in my life at all.
